The Local Lowdown: Restaurant Sainte-Marie

Date Published

Welcome to The Local Lowdown, where locals and visitors alike can discover the businesses that make Midland, Penetanguishene, Tay and Tiny special!

Maybe you’ll find a new menu item, discover a service you didn’t know existed, or stumble upon a local business you never knew was right here in our community. Whatever the discovery, we’re here to help you shop local, explore local and get to know the people behind the businesses in Southern Georgian Bay.

With First Light season just around the corner, we're shining a spotlight on a business that brings together history, hospitality and a little something unexpected. Introducing Restaurant Sainte-Marie!

At first glance, you might think it's simply a restaurant, but there's so much more to discover. Located on the historic grounds of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Restaurant Sainte-Marie embraces its unique surroundings while welcoming guests year-round.

And why are we featuring them right now? The winter dining domes are back!

Just in time for the holiday season, these private dining domes return to the grounds, offering one of the most unique dining experiences in our community. Whether you're planning an intimate evening for two or gathering with a larger group of family and friends, the beautifully decorated domes provide your own private space, complete with a fantastic prix fixe menu.

The domes are especially popular during First Light, and Thursday evenings are a particular treat when fireworks add a little extra sparkle to the experience. Reservations can book up quickly during the holidays, but here's a little local tip: the domes are available throughout the winter! If you can't snag a reservation during First Light, why not plan a January, February or March evening under the stars instead?

Of course, there's plenty more to enjoy beyond the domes.

Being located on such a historically significant site, Restaurant Sainte-Marie incorporates the history and flavours of the community into its dining experience. From their Three Sisters Soup, inspired by traditional Indigenous foodways, to more familiar Canadian favourites like fish and chips, there's a little something for everyone.

They also collaborate with Sainte-Marie among the Hurons on special culinary events throughout the year. One of the most popular is Hearth to Table: Dinner in 1648, a summer dining series that brings guests together for an intimate meal with the historic site as its backdrop. The menu takes inspiration from traditional cuisine and gives it a modern, elevated twist, making for another memorable dining experience.

And if afternoon tea is more your speed, keep an eye out for their Sunday Tea Service in the summer! Guests can enjoy a pot of tea alongside a tiered tray of sweets, sandwiches and other treats, either on the beautiful patio or inside the restaurant, all within the historic surroundings of Sainte-Marie.

While Sainte-Marie among the Hurons closes its regular historic site operations for the winter following First Light, Restaurant Sainte-Marie keeps its doors open year-round, continually evolving its menu, specials and experiences for the community.

We'd be remiss not to mention the patio, too! Even as we head into the colder months, it's worth remembering for next summer. With an abundance of plants, flowers and greenery, the patio has a wonderfully tropical feel. It's the perfect spot to stop in after work or on the weekend, enjoy a drink and appetizer, and settle in for a little relaxation.

And if all of that wasn't enough, Restaurant Sainte-Marie also offers space and services for private events, including weddings, business gatherings, celebrations of life and more. Whether you're planning a special celebration or a professional gathering, they can help bring the space, food and details together.

So whether you're looking for a unique date night, a family dinner, an afternoon tea or somewhere to host your next special event, Restaurant Sainte-Marie is worth adding to your local list!

You'll find them at 16164 Highway 12 East in Tay Township, open seven days a week. Check their website for current hours, menus, special events and reservations.
