INNOVATIONS ’19 – Juried Contemporary Craft Exhibition – Upper Gallery
An exhibition of contemporary craft by artists from across Canada.

Juried by:Dr Denis Longchamps (CEO, Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery), Sarah Quinton (Curatorial Director, Textile Museum of Canada), Stuart Reid (Independent Curator, Arts Writer, and Board Member for the Ontario Craft Council)

From emerging artists and seasoned creators, the range of submissions was an impressive mix of ideas, materials, and skill levels. From the fine detail to the sculptural statement, from functional objects to conceptual artworks, the resulting exhibition is a feast of personal expressions, full of character and individuality. It is evident that today’s makers are merging handmade tradition with astute commentary on contemporary life. The awards go to creators who presented works that are unique, and technically sound.

RETOOLED: New Assemblages by Justin Cosman and David A. Hill – Project Gallery
Reclaiming the discarded, David Hill & Justin Cosman reexamine refuse and the forgotten for their aesthetics and form. Primarily working with metal, established photographer and sculptor Hill ensures whimsy is part of his additive process, with old buttons, knobs and levers rearranged to arrive at abstract figurations in the overall composition. Emerging artist Cosman keeps to the non-objective, exploring space, shape, colour and texture through waste often associated with construction and packaging. Remnants of plywood, cardboard, and sprayfoam become his muse.

RECRAFTED – Atrium Gallery
As makers, artists often have a way of looking beyond the original form or intention of objects to see their potential as raw material. Re-Crafted presents artists from the North Simcoe community and beyond who have submmited 2D & 3D works of art that incorporate reclaimed materials to arrive at something new. Collages, assemblages, reconstructions, deconstructions, wrappings, splicings and reconfigurations all encouraged
